"The games are awarded to Munich", these words from the mouth of IOC President Avery Brundage caused great joy in Munich in 1966. The seemingly impossible had been achieved and the 1972 Summer Games had been brought to Munich. For the opening of the Games on August 26, 1972, the city welcomed the sports world to a brand new Olympic site. With its spectacular tent-roof architecture, it is still considered an architectural masterpiece today.
